Then you have MAME create the config file by typing mame-createconfig. MAME will then create the mame.ini file in theMAME installation folder. This file contains the defaultconfiguration settings for a new MAME installation.
The steps for Linux and MacOS are similar to those of Windows. If youinstalled MAME using the package manager that came from a Linux distro, you willtype mame -createconfig into your terminal of choice.

Choose Save Configuration to create the mame.ini file with defaultsettings. From here, you can either continue to configure things from thegraphical user interface or edit the mame.ini file in your favoritetext editor.
Once the port is successfully installed, you'll have an executable called mame. To be able to run the ROMs, you need to build the right filesystem tree in a directory. What I generally do is to create a directory in my home directory called mame:
and run the mame executable inside of it. MAME will run full screen and it will create a folder inside of /mame called cfg. That is the folder where MAME stores the configuration files. In the MAME initial dashboard you won't see much for the moment...
MAME can be compiled using source code in a Linux distribution that does not have a package manager. MAME can be compiled by visiting the Github page. If you have a package manager installed, you can install MAME on a distro that does not have one. For example, on Ubuntu, you can install MAME by using the command * sudo apt-get install mame*.
To begin setting up MAME, run the qmc2-sdlmame.app application in your QMC2 folder. You will see a screen like the one below, asking you for a few credentials. The only things you need to enter here are the path to the SDLMAME executable you downloaded earlier (which is why putting it in your QMC2 folder is so useful) and a path to your ROMs.
Best of all, MAME is free, available for Windows-based PCs at mamedev.org. Support for other platforms, such as Mac and mobile devices, can be found elsewhere on the Web. The software was originally created in late 1996 by Nicola Salmoria, but has been re-released multiple times over the years to adapt to new hardware, including 32- and 64-bit machines. Because source code is also available, programmers are encouraged to contribute to the ongoing project in order to ensure stability, add more controller support or squeeze in additional features. While not many gamers are aware of MAME, some enthusiasts have gone so far as buying or building a stand-up arcade cabinet to house a computer loaded with MAME.
I posted this to /r/mame but it got automatically removed because I didn't have amazing Reddit karma. I emailed the maintainer to see if it could be approved and s/he just said "Nope". Must say I'm getting a bit disheartened with the MAME community. It just seems dead, and where it's not dead, nasty. 2ff7e9595c
